Rubys Cafe

04-29 Rubys Cafe
Are there any Aussie readers out there? Maybe you could tell us if burgers are typically sweet, not salty in the land down under. Because last time we were a little taken aback by the sweetness of the burger from Rubys. This time, a year later, it seems the sugary taste is not a mistake but rather deliberate. So... is this normal?

I think the sweetness maybe the ketchup or they could be using sweet burger buns .

An Aussie burger should consist of meat, lettuce, beetroot, tomato and onion's .Pinapple, bacon, egg are all extra's so i think Rubys are deviate's.

The pineapple has to be grilled when the meat is on the grill so it caramelises ,think almost charred .

It's actually a good burger, you can tell, but a tad disconcerting. And we swear, it's not the condiments or the bun - it's the meat. Give it a try and let us know what you think!

I've never had a burger at Ruby's, but I do like Ruby Tuesday's burgers :)

We sometimes put caramelised onions in our burgers - that could be why they taste sweet (at least in NSW).

I've never eaten at Runy's but could they have added a little cinnamon in the meat as the Greek do? Cinnamon gives meat a sweet aftertaste.

Aussie burgers should not be sweet. But many die-hard fans love beetroot on their burgers (in fact, many say it's not an Aussie burger without the beetroot. The saying is: You can't Beet a Root!) (Root is Aussie slang for sexual relations). Also, many foodies, including my husband, make caramelised onions to go on burgers, which is delicious. But these should be the only reasons for sweetness, and it shouldn't overshadow the flavours - more enhance them. Oh, and some people like pineapple too.

ditto the beetroot and pineapple (or caramelised onions on the classier varieties!). meat should not be sweet! also, aussie bread is not sweetened like typical american buns tend to be.
