I didn't even know there were such things as dud packages of Nilla Wafers, although it's not entirely unsurprising that things gather dust in the drugstores of our fair city. In 2009, the last time we had Nilla Wafers, we got a bad batch but this time... perfecto!

Alton Brown recently did an episode of Good Eats on Banana Pudding. He claims that the recipe for Nilla Wafers has changed since we were kids. In place of real vanilla, they now use imitation, and there are many more added chemicals and additives than in the past. I had attributed it to aging taste buds, but it makes sense in a way.
