I forget what it was, but I seem to recall there was something on WNYC that inspired me to bake an apple pie on new year's. Oh, I think it was Michael Pollan speaking about how we should eat as locally as possible.
So presented here is apple pie made from local ingredients minus the butter, flour and sugar. I tried out this four and twenty blackbirds recipe, but I couldn't get the caramel to work, and in searching other soft caramel recipes, this one is rather peculiar. I'd be willing to try it again, but not sure where it went wrong. I ended up with a white caramel, which I saved as a condiment. Not sure if it won Y's approval, but I thought it turned out decent.
