We have yet to find the dirty soul of the Flatiron. So far it feels like a younger version of midtown, hipper and cooler but still a place where the streets bustle with worker bees on lunch break. I miss our cranky old Italian ladies on the corner, that batty Chinese woman who used to whack people with her cane if you got too close, lost tourists looking for Little Italy and hipster freelancers lounging in cafes all afternoon long. Lunch too is missing some charm, sure there are reliable lunches like the City Bakery buffet, but what about the grime and grit?

As a Flatiron luncher of almost 7 years, I feel your pain. I eat a lot of health food store lunches. There's also Jess Bakery near SVA, although it's probably far away from where you are. A branch of Sarabeth's is opening on 27th and Park? Yeah, it's pretty dire!
But you're not too far from the bounty of Indian food in Murray Hill, or, when you've got the time for a walk, parts of East Village :) For authentic, delicious South Indian food, I recommend Saravanaa Bhavan, at Lex and 27th or so. Get the idli (steamed lentil/rice cakes) and a thali to share. Yum. Then there's Kalustyan's right nearby also.
Aw thanks guys for the support and recs. I suspect we're being big babies and have to get our walking shoes on.
