The one thing I rarely do these days (since having a baby) is take detours between work and home. But the slight detour I took today lead me to an exciting discovery. I picked up a chocolate chip cookie from The Commons, a lovely cafe (where I've been meaning to but have yet to try their lunch) serving good coffee. As per usual I asked where the cookies are from and to my surprise I was told, "my mother makes them" by the gentleman behind the counter, who turns out to be one of the partners. At that moment it wouldn't have mattered if the cookies were bad - it just made me that happy. Fortunately, the cookies are good. Tate's-esque crispy crunch buttery, and perhaps a bit heavy on the chocolate chips but don't listen to me - I like my chocolate chip cookies without the chocolate chips.
The Commons, 128 7th Avenue, New York, NY 10011 (between 17th and 18th Streets)
