This is a classic cake doughnut that has been featured on our blog many times in the past. We miss it dearly and wish there was an equivalent in the Flatiron. I'd say Carpe Donut is a good contender, however their truck is not dependably in the neighborhood, nor close to where we lunch. Come park yourself close to 5th Avenue again!

You would have to be hiding under a rock today or sworn off social media to not know that it was #nationaldonutday. We tried a couple of our local places only to find lines of people waiting for their free donut or a chance to win free donuts for a year or whatever. We finally ended up at the little Dunkin Donuts on 23rd just west of 6th Ave. Sheesh. On the bright side, they were giving away free donuts with a coffee purchase so they must have been cranking out new donuts all day long and the ones we had were as good as it gets.

In brief: We've had these before but never fresh, but now I can see why it's so revered.
Ever since the original Sullivan Street Bakery moved away from Sullivan Street in Soho, we rarely have a chance to have their goods. But today on a stretch of 9th Avenue I'm not usually on but will be for the next few months, I was happy to spot this location. I guess we were in luck with the freshness. The dough was pillowy and melt-in-your-mouth. There could be a tad less of the jam (and I ate the less jam half of the bomboloni), but nevertheless it was quite lovely. Looking forward to trying the vanilla cream and chocolate next.

In brief: The cream filled strawberry doughseed from Doughnut Plant is a valiant attempt at deliciousness, but nothing beats the caramelized glaze of the creme brulee doughseed.

In brief: M. got me all salivating earlier today with this picture of a "Doughka" from Dough, apparently a cross between a babka and doughnut dough. Right?! How can one resist. But neither of us actually read the post and so neither of us saw that they're only for special order for Friday and the weekend. Sad were we. That is until we had this tropical currant doughnut instead.

In brief: The glazed donuts at Cinnamon Snail are similar to Doughnut Plant, so if you like that sort of thing, good for you. In a strict bang for buck evaluation, I might spend my extra bucks at DP instead of the $2 for this smallish one.

In brief: Sweet dear Kim brought us a doughnut from the newly opened Dough a few blocks away in Manhattan.
We've tried the doughnuts from Dough, and frankly I hadn't fallen in love. That is until today. While the photo is not pretty, it was a yummy in my tummy. And I'm also thankful that Kim brought us the chocolate which we would probably never have bought ourselves, but turns out is the real winner! Everyone needs a Kim in their life!

In brief: I've tried the doughnuts from Dough a handful of times now, and I don't get the hype.
If you've read this blog with any regularity, you'd know about our immense love for the donut. But I just don't get the hype about the donuts from Dough. They are very good, yes, but great? I'm not so sure. Theses are purely a matter of taste so there are no bad feelings for the loyal followers. It's just not a donut I dream or think about. Put it in front of my face? I will happily eat it.
